BEXIS2 is intended to serve as database for complex data like biodiversity data. It has been designed to meet the requirements of researchers in the field of biodiversity, but it is generic enough to serve other communities as well.

BEXIS2 is a free and open source software (LGPL 3.0) supporting researchers in managing their data throughout the entire data life cycle from data collection, documentation, processing, analyzing, to sharing and publishing research data.

Basic features:

  • Upload data: structured data as csv and any unstructured data as well
  • Metadata: BEXIS2 comes with a set of basic metadata schemes, individual metadata schemes can be created as XSD files
  • Pipeline for data publication: export of data and metadata as e.g. Darwin Core Archive for publication in Pangaea
  • Re-use data structures: creation of data structures and definition of data types, quality control of tabular data by data definitions
  • Search data: by keyword (incl. autocomplete) or use facets, filtering, sorting
  • Dataset permissions: specify fine grained data permissions
  • Dataset versioning: return to any previous version if needed
  • Web API Access: retrieve data stored in BEXIS2 directly with a script or from your application (e.g. R) using API calls
